Tattoo Removal by Laser

by: Andrew Jacobs

Tattoos are a fun and daring way to express individuality. Body art has been a chosen form of self expression for many years, dating back well into the history books. However, it's not at all uncommon for people to get carried away and soon discover that they are regretting that permanent picture of their favorite Disney character or fire breathing skull. What seems like a great idea at the time isn't always so and for this reason one should greatly consider all aspects of tattooing the body. With technological advances the use of lasers for tattoo removal has grown into a well developed industry. Much like the tattoo itself though, laser treatment should be well researched and considered before hand.

The removal of a tattoo isn't a cut and dried process. It often takes several treatments to effectively break down the pigment of the ink. The laser itself does not erase the tattoo much the way some imagine it to. Instead, it breaks down the pigments which then are absorbed back into the body and then flushed out naturally. A consultation should always be done before the procedure. Never hesitate to ask a question or voice concerns regarding laser treatments. Open lines of communication between the doctor performing the removal and the patient are essential when it comes to surgery of any kind.

There are a few different lasers used in the removal of tattoos. Some are designed to penetrate much deeper, usually when certain colors are used. The level of pain varies depending which laser is used as does the risk of scarring. Certain colors tend to lighten much easier than others while amateur tattoo jobs fade faster than professional. In most cases the pain is said to be tolerable though some may require anaesthetic. Of course everyone's pain tolerance is different and this plays a large role in the amount of pain felt during the procedure.

The recovery time after having a laser tattoo removal surgery varies but is usually for several days, sometimes weeks. The NdYAG laser has been said to leave more blisters and abrasions on the skin than the other two types of laser commonly used, the Alexandrite and Ruby lasers. Bleeding is minimal if at all as is the flaking and itching of skin. It's recommended to wait a few months in between removal treatments to allow the skin an opportunity to heal considerably as well as give the body ample time to remove pigment waste.

It's important to remember that no procedure is guaranteed to be a miracle cure. In some cases the remnants of the tattoo do not fade completely and perhaps the result won't look better than the tattoo had in the first place. What works well for some won't always work for others but the fact that it does work in most cases makes it worth looking into. Cost varies based on the tattoo itself which is another reason why consultations are so crucial. Select a well reputed doctor that you feel comfortable with and always take time to think things over before rushing into anything.
